汽车工业一直是工业机器人较大的客户。很长一段时间，工业机器人在工作时必须与人类完全隔离。为了应付汽车工业庞大的流水线，过去厂房里的工业机器人大多巨大而笨重，像凶猛的怪兽……不建议工业机器人和人一起工作。因为机器人力量很大，工作路径有一定的不确定性和危险性。
由于3c工业中处理的零配件大多比较小巧，需要工人和机器相互配合操作，传统的大型工业机器人不再适合了。厂商喜欢的是那些能够和人类友好相处、并肩作业的中小型协作机器人。库卡公司在今年推出了名叫iiwa的协作型机器人。它有着准确的力矩传感器，能够在和人发生碰撞时自动停止。发那科公司也在今年4月展出了新的协作性机器人。它身上不再涂着公司标志性的明黄色，而是让人感觉舒适安全的嫩绿色，这也让人能一眼将其认出来。
